Hi. I saw in an little article in the Messanger that your knitting lessons can be for "young students." I have an 8 year old who really wants to learn to knit this summer. Is she old enough?

Hi, Connie

Absolutely! 8 is an IDEAL age to begin and there are lots of cute, simple projects that she could begin with. There are many EXPERT knitters and crocheters at our gatherings whom she could learn from. We'd be delighted to see her this summer on Monday afternoons ...or on any Thursday evening.

If you want to buy her some basic beginning items: U.S. Size 8 knitting needles are good (a shorter length is best) and any simple single-color worsted yarn (it's harder to see what the stitches look like and find mistakes with fancier yarns). That's all it really takes to begin! If you cannot afford needles and yarn, we do have some she could borrow for a while.

There are also lots of good books out for children - many at the library, too but we have print handouts we could also supply her with to get her going.

Do YOU knit or crochet? If not, we'd love to help YOU learn, too! Our stitchers range in age from 15 to 83 and have included embroidery, cross stitch, lace making, hardanger, tatting, spinning and even chain-mail! Last week one stitcher who came was even just mending her jeans while others were making socks, scarves, and some just perusing new knitting catalogs and magazines.

On April 10, I hope you could attend at Mocha Moment 7-9 when some local farmers are going to discuss their alpacas and their fiber.

Thanks for your inquiry. I look forward to meeting you and your daughter someday soon :-)

Best wishes!

Thanks for the supply list. We will be sure to bring them! When do the summer lessons at the Speakeasy start?

I don't knit or crochet. Lets just say I had a bad experience in Junior High with that! But my daughter is very excited! Thanks.

Lessons begin whenever YOU are ready. All you have to do is show up! Sorry you had a bad experience when you were younger :-( We GUARANTEE to change that and bring a smile to your face. REALLY! These skills are stress-busters. We'll help you discover that and make a few new friends along the way, too. Looking forward to meeting you...
