Midwinter Fiber & Yarn Tasting

FREE ADMISSION!

Meet Wisconsin and Illinois producers of wool and other fibers including may breeds of sheep, llamas, alpacas, goats, camel, rabbits, as well as bamboo, silk and soy at the 3rd Annual Midwinter Fiber & Yarn Tasting on Saturday February 25, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Basics Natural Foods Co-op, 1711 Lodge Drive, Janesville, WI.

Clearview Farm Cormos and Ambrosia & Bliss will join Frene Creek Farms, Rainbow Fleece Farm, Rock Farms, Bumble Bee Acres, Pacesetter Alpacas, Booties & Handspun by Babylove, and the Green Yarn Company. You will find hand-spun and hand-dyed yarn, roving, tops, raw and washed fleece in addition to completed wool products that are all produced locally.

Presented by the Janesville Area Stitch 'n Bitch, the 3rd Annual Midwinter Fiber & Yarn Tasting will appeal to those looking for local, handcrafted items, as well as those who spin, knit, crochet, weave and enjoy all the fiber and needle arts. Free spinning, knitting, and crochet demonstrations and free lessons will be available all day. Admission is free for all ages.

Donations of new, handmade blankets will also be accepted for distribution to local children suffering any type of trauma by the Janesville/Rock Valley Project Linus chapter and a "Stash Bash" will be your opportunity to swap patterns, yarns and tools with other stitchers. If there are items remaining at the end of the day from the "Stash Bash", they will be donated to the annual Janesville Salvation Army sale.

While we appreciate all the hospitality and great food that the SpeakEasy has provided us over the past few years, their lack of posting against weapons (under Wisconsin's new concealed carry law) has forced us to relocate to an environment that is posted. If you have a fiber/stitching project that you don't have to "plug in", want to learn a new skill from talented stitchers (knit, crochet, spinning, quilting, etc.), or simply want to enjoy some new stitching companions, please join us and say thanks to Edmund (owner)!

RE: Wisconsin New Concealed Carry Law

An inquiry to the Janesville Hobby Lobby manager indicates the Janesville store WILL ALLOW GUNS on the premises under the new Wisconsin law that went into effect on November 1. They consider "posting" a corporate attempt to revise the new law (???) versus following the law AS WRITTEN allowing posting out of concern for the health, safety and welfare of their customers. Previous customers of Hobby Lobby should judge for themselves if they will now further endanger themselves frequenting this business in the future. Inquires to other area fiber/craft shops will be listed here as the information is received. Your voice matters and you should let store managers know your position on this issue.

Please join the Janesville Area Stitch 'n Bitch on Saturday, October 29 from 10am to noon at Basics Natural Co-op, 1711 Lodge Drive, Janesville to challenge your skills with others while playing "Last Knitter Standing".

The object of the game is to be the knitter with the most knitted rows at the end of the game through a series of trivia questions and knitting challenges. Last Knitter Standing will not only make you laugh, learn, and test your knitting knowledge, but will also tap into your competitive spirit.

You can register as an individual player or as a team. Players are encouraged to bring their own knitting needles and yarn. Our guild members are putting together a Chinese auction which entails donated fresh fleeces and products from local breeders of Wisconsin. Everyone who works with yarn has a story and some area stitchers shared theirs in the annual Stitch 'n Bitch contest.

First Place Winning "Yarn"

It was during World War II. I was in high school. Yarn was scarce. My piano teacher taught me how to knit using cotton cord. I knit 4"x18" strips that were used for bandages of casualties.

Many years later, I belonged to the Spinners and Weavers Guild in Texas. There, because of the summer heat, we did most of our past time in air conditioning.

Most memorable was a demonstration we did at a folk fair called "Sheep to Shawl". A line of angora sheep were sheared. The wool was combed, rolled into thick cords called rolags, spun, and woven.

My grandsons had a dog, Max, whose coat was long and white. He was sheared in the summer. I was able to spin it into yarn making it into scarves. I could imagine, on a cold day, they might pull the scarves up around their necks remembering the snuggling they used to do with their pal, Max.

I think I've done it all: spin, weave, knit, crochet and sewing. I've enjoyed creating and designing of afghans, stoles, argyle socks, and sweaters using many different sizes, yarns, and needles.

Currently I am knitting stocking caps for the newborn.

Second Place Winning "Yarn"

My tale begins at the Janesville Farmer’s Market one fine October morning. A woman approached our SnB booth seeking help with a crocheted afghan she was trying to make for a gift. She was having problems with dropping stitches and was so frustrated that she stated that she would pay someone $50.00 to make it for her. I told her that I wouldn’t do it for $50.00, but would do it for $100.00. She agreed, so I took on the job. After dealing with some problems about getting all the yarn from her, I began working on the project. Immediately I ran into problems with dropping stitches. I tore out row after row, trying find the problem with the count. I looked for an errata for the pattern, and worked out the math for each row trying to locate the problem. Finding no solution, I decided that I would simply have to count every row. I don’t think I will ever forget that count—231 stitches. Things were finally moving along nicely until I counted the skeins of yarn I had left. It was apparent that I was short by 4-5 skeins. I called the woman to tell her and suggested that we go to a local store that carried the yarn to get more. When we got there, they were out of that color. We decided to put in solid colored stripes and picked out some yarn. Before we left, I happened to find a clerk and asked about the color we had needed. She said that it was one of their most popular colors and usually sold out as soon as they got a shipment in. They were expecting a shipment the next day, so she wrote down my phone number and the amount of yarn I needed. She would be working the next day and promised to put the needed yarn aside for me, and to call me as soon as she had it unpacked the shipment. I waited most of the next day for a call from the store. At 4:45pm, I decided to call the store, in hopes of finding out about the yarn. When I called, I was connected to the same clerk. She was overjoyed that I had called. She had put the yarn aside for me and but had lost the slip with my phone number. After picking up the yarn (which was already almost completely sold out), I continued to work on the afghan. It was now mid-November and it needed to be done for Christmas. It was the only project I was working on, so I didn’t see any problem with getting it done on time until the woman called and asked if I could possibly have it done by the first week of December. She was leaving for Texas on the 4th and wanted to take it with her. As it was cutting 3 weeks off of my work time, I told her it would not be done until closer to Christmas. She agreed to pay for shipping, but insisted that it could only be shipped by UPS from a downtown hardware store. I continued to work like a maniac on the afghan (231 stitches over and over and…) and had finally reached the border when I got a call from the woman. She was leaving the week before Christmas to another city in Texas and needed the afghan to arrive before she left. This cut my time a bit short but I was sure I could finish and get it shipped to her. I worked 12-15 hours a day to finish it. As there were smokers in our apartment, I needed to wash the afghan before I shipped it. My roommate and I took it to the laundry mat and I carefully washed and dried it according to the washing instructions on the yarn label. As we were folding the afghan, I noticed a stray strand of yarn and mentioned that I’d need to trim it. My roommate looked at the afghan and then said “WHAT ABOUT THAT BIG HOLE?” To my horror, I saw a 2” wide hole in the center of the afghan. I had a serious emotional meltdown in the laundry mat, carefully folded the afghan and went home, trying to figure out how I was going to repair the hole. I had a sleepless night, filled with tears and prayers to the Gods for help. In the morning, I carefully laid out the afghan to assess the damage. Apparently, the yarn had a weak spot and had simply broken. I said a few prayers and started to repair the damage. By the time I was finished, the repair was so invisible that I couldn’t find. I said my thank you’s to deity and boxed it up for shipment. I wanted to make sure that the package would arrive on time, so I called the hardware store. They told me that it would not arrive until after the holidays. I decided to try the post office. They were the same price as UPS and they said they couldn’t guarantee that it would get to Texas in 3 days. It was the only shot I had of getting it there in any sort of timely manner, so off it went to the USPS. I breathed a sigh of relief and went home to call the woman and let her know that her package was on it’s way. She called after the holidays to thank me. It had arrived in time and she was thrilled with it, as was the recipient of the gift. I’ll NEVER do this again!!!!!!

Every knitter has a story. It could be the story of how he or she

started knitting, the story of a project gone awry, or the perfect

knitted object that has been cherished in the family for years.

Anyone of any age who knits, crochets, weaves or otherwise

uses yarn in their projects is encouraged to submit their "good yarn"

or experience with yarn to the "Good Yarn Competition"

sponsored by the Janesville Area Stitch 'n Bitch.

Prizes including books, fiber, tools, or similar related items

will be awarded and entrants will receive a free copy of the

very best "yarns".

Entrants are encouraged to submit their stories supplying

their name, age, address, phone and e-mail by

This is NOT A RACE and this KAL will provide advice, tips, and a sympathetic ear if it all goes horribly wrong and accolades when it goes right! As always, participation at SnB is free, all ages and genders are welcome, and there are no membership requirements.

We'll be making a cute cardigan in sizes S, M, L, XL, and XXL (32-34", 36-38",40-42", 44-46", 48-50")

Congratulations to door prize winners Jennifer Hayden of Hebron, IL and Petra Horst of Stoughton! Although the Janesville Jets lost, the stitchers had a fun afternoon. Hope we see YOU next year for the fun!

• Don't forget to join Alice and Judith as they present "An Abridged History of Spinning and Knitting" on Wednesday, July 22, Noon-1pm at the Janesville Performing Arts Center, 408 S. Main, Janesville, as part of the Brown Bag Lunch Series. Enjoy your lunch while you listen to lectures and see demonstrations of a huge variety of topics on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.

• Open House Farm Days at Trillium Springs Farm where you'll enjoy visiting with Suri Alpacas. The new farm gift store gallery will feature handspun yarns, super soft rovings, raw fleece, hand knit items and other alpaca apparel. You'll also find fine art, photography, soaps, jellies, honey, furniture, pottery, felted hats and much more. Spinning demonstrations and refreshments will be available on July 24, 25 and 26 from 9am to dusk. Follow Hwy. 80 From Richland Center to I, right to Co. Hwy. II. • SnB, in conjunction with Project Linus, is now working with the Rock Communities Youth Network Alternative Service Program to teach skills and provide community service opportunity for juvenile offenders.

• Field trips are now being planned. If you'd like to join us visiting area wool festivals and fall farm events, please contact us and we'll make sure there's room in the car for you!

• Visit and shop SnB at Basics as we participate with Arts Loop on August 2. Artists will be scattered at five locations on Janesville's North side. The event is free and participants include potters, painters, soap makers, photographers and fiber artists. Ye old stitchers Judith, Paula, Becky and Jennifer had an incredible time at the 2009 Janesville Renaissance Faire selling our stitchery and being entertained by merry folk, while demonstrating and teaching about heritage skills. We hope you'll join us in 2010!
